    Quick Overview

Chunky rubies and emeralds on a sterling silver necklace

Emeralds are a variety of the mineral beryl colored green by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium. Having a hardness of 7.5 - 8, this green variety of Beryl derives it’s name from the Greek word “smaragdus” meaning green. Most emeralds are highly included so their brittleness (resistance to breakage) is classified as generally poor. Emerald is Velvety green in color, The most coveted emerald is that which is radiant and smooth and has neither cracks nor dots.

Ruby is a pink to blood red gemstone, a variety of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide). The common red color is caused mainly by the element chromium.  Its name comes from rubber, Latin for red. Other varieties of gem-quality corundum are called sapphires.  It is considered one of the four precious stones (together with the sapphire, the emerald and the diamond)
Ruby may be any color of red depending on the chromium and iron content of the stone. Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum, the second hardest mineral known to exist, surpassed only by diamond. Ruby is known as the stone of love. It is worn in all types of jewelry.

Care and Treatment of Rubies and Emeralds: Generally, rubies and emeralds are quite durable. Still, they are subject to chipping and fracture if handled roughly.
